Gastronomy, restaurants & bars

There are so many great places to eat and drink in the valley, you are spoilt for choice.

Olla Aranesa- the famous local dish

Our favourite place for tapas is on the mountain at El Refugi San Miguel in Bonaigua, serving elegant plated tapas.

You can't visit Spain and not have tapas.

For fine dining visit El Portalet or Er Occitan in Bossost. Gel de foc in the La Pleta Hotel hosts guest with Michelin starred chefs to serve something different. In the quaint town of Arties, Pinotage restaurant boasts a extensive wine collection from their wine cellar.

For something local and authentic, we recommend you try Alioli, family run intimate cooking on show serving the best local meat or to El Moli where you can have the famous Calcots.

You don't come to Baqueira without spending many lunch times on the mountain at the Moet bar, with VIP treatment, sushi, live DJs, great views and lots of sun.

Val D'Aran is formed by 33 villages that accommodate more than 10,000 habitants. It is characterised by an architecture based on stone, wood and slate, Romanesque buildings, 13th Century parish churches, narrow streets and is surrounded by intense nature. Val D’Aran also has its own language called Aranese, and is one of 3 languages widely spoken in the valley. Bagerque is the highest inhabited town at 1490m and is famously known for its cheese making which has been going since the 1700s.

In the main town of Vielha, which is at the bottom of the Valley, there is a wide range of authentic restaurants and bars offering you a unique and fulfilling dining experience, including tasting local caviar and local craft beers. Boutiques and shops adorn the streets, where you can purchase handcrafted gifts and memorabilia. There is an indoor ice-skating rink for those that fancy a different winter sport, or alternatively we can arrange a trip to a frozen lake for and ice skating experience.

Culture

IMG_3450.jpg

It is packed with culture and activities which will contribute to making your holiday one you won’t forget. How about an exhilarating Audi snow driving experience! Or Take a day out of the snow and spend it having a relaxing spa day or a trip to the Aran Wildlife Park; get close to the wildlife of the Pyrenees and discover the exceptional biodiversity of the Aran Valley one of the richest territories in fauna and flora of the Pyrenees.
There are plenty of scenic walks and trails that are easily accessible from the town. The views are spectacular including the waterfalls that flow from the soaring mountains into the towns, natural thermal pools and large hidden lakes.

Activities & Experiences

Around the Christmas and New Year period there are plenty of activities to make the festive time of year extra special. In the month of December, there is a small local Christmas market, which is full of atmosphere getting you into the spirit! Try some Spanish and French sweets and treats and a hot chocolate on a crisp, cold December day.

Christmas Day the children (and adults!) have great fun trying to spot Father Christmas in his sleigh on the mountain.

On New Year’s Eve in Baqueira, hundreds of skiers ski down the home stretch with flaming torches to create a wonderful sight, followed by a fantastic fireworks display to really kick off the evening’s festivities.

Kings day is a national holiday in Spain and is celebrated more than Christmas in Spanish culture. This takes place on 6th January and in the town of Vielha a parade marches through the streets with the three Kings at centre stage. After the parade the Kings offer presents to the children and throw lots of sweets into the streets!

Skiing and snowboarding in Baqueira/Beret has been enjoyed by locals for many years, even the King of Spain has a holiday residence in the area! The mountain consists of 4 main peaks, Baqueira, Beret, Baciver and Bonaigua which all have a vast variety of slopes, that are suitable for all levels. You will be very surprised by how quiet it is, rarely ever queuing for lifts, some days it feels like you have the whole mountain to yourself. The heliski and touring here is like nowhere else in Europe. Our experienced ski instructors look forward to welcoming you for lessons on the slopes, whether  beginner, intermediate or advanced. Beret is where the snow park and the fun park is situated and even if you aren’t into doing the tricks yourself, it’s still fun to watch!
